The Momentum ODI 2021 is going to be played between the 10th of January and the 14th of February in 2021 with all the matches being played in Potchefstroom.
The teams are going to be no spectators allowed and the teams will be in COVID-19 secure bio bubbles. There will be six teams competing for the title with the op-4 competing in knockout matches after the group stage ends.
This is a year in which T20 cricket is going to take precedence as the T20 Worlde Cup 2021 is on the horizon but making runs in the 50 over format is going to be helpful for selection as well. Interestingly, the previous season of the Momentum ODI Cup could not be completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and so we don’t have a defending champion for this season!
The ODI Cup is coming at a time when the South African team has no other international engagements and so almost all of the players are going to be available for the bulk of the group stage.
That means batsmen like Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, and Dean Elgarre all going to be a part of the tournament before embarking on their tour of Sri Lanka. Farhaan Nehardien, Heinrich Klaasen, and Theunis de Bruyn add further international quality to the lineup.
The batting looks very strong and the biggest challenge is going to be to ensure that the reserved players are ready to step up once the test squad gets ready to leave.
While Lunge Ngidi is a part of the Titans, it is unlikely he will play much of a role. Workload management is much stricter for the fast bowlers. Junior Dala could be the one that leads the attack for the Titans with support from Tabraiz Shamsi, Hardus Viljoen, and Corbin Bosch.
The Titans were underwhelming in the previous season but we think this is going to be the year in which settle some old scores.
Bet on the Momentum Multiple Titans to win.
For the longest time, South African cricket were isolated from playing against the rest of the world due to the former governments apartheid policies. This forced them to compete in domestic tournaments and saw the creation of several of them. One of the were the Benson and Hedges Series which had its first season in 1982-83 where there were five teams competing for the title.
The tournament kept expanding and changed its name to The Standard Bank Cup in 1996-97 where the format was moved to 45 overs per side. Later it changed the name to the MTN Domestic Championship and finally the name became the Momentum One Day Cup.
The tournament is played in the one-day domestic format. In trying to mimic the one-day international (ODI) format they have reverted to the 50 overs a side format. Before that it was limited to a 40 overs tournament.
All of the teams play each other twice, one game at home and one away game. The team that is in first place automatically qualifies for the finals, and number 2 and number 3 plays each other for the final spot in the tournament finals.
Points are awarded at the following rate:
Win – 4 points
Tie – 2 points
Loss – 0 points
Bonus points – 1 point (awarded if a team achieves a run-rate of 1.25 or better than the opposing team)
The bookmakers are a little shy with offering bets on this domestic cup. I can understand this as it doesn’t have the same following as The Ashes or the IPL for example, but there are always people interested in betting on it. If you want to find some bets to place, I suggest checking out www.10cric.com as they are known for putting up bets on this tournament. They are mostly limited to winner betting, but there are the occasional prop bet available. Check them out if you want to bet on the Momentum One Day Cup.
