CPL 2021 Team Review

Trinbago Knight Riders

CPL 2020 Position: Winners

Strengths

TKR is a very strong batting lineup, quite possibly the strongest this season as well. The defending champions had three players who hit 20 sixes each in CPL 2020! Lendl Simmons top-scored with 356 runs and will once again lead the lineup with support from Kieron Pollard, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, and Tim Seifer.

Weaknesses

Not too many to be honest. There may be some concerns that a few of the players are past their best and at the end of their careers but that has not stopped TKR from dominating up until now.

CPL 2021 Betting tips and prediction for Trinbago Knight Riders

TKR is the current bookmaker’s favorite and frankly, at 3.00, not a bad rate at all. We think they are almost certain to make the playoffs and anything can happen from there. We think they have an excellent chance to lift the title once more.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

CPL 2020 Result: 2nd After Group Stage, Lost in the Semi-Final

Strengths

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have some of the brightest young players of West Indian cricket in their team. We are talking about Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, and Brandon King leading the batting. The Warriors also have some very experienced and dependable players in Shoaib Malik, Imran Tahir, and Mohammad Hafeez.

The batting is strong on paper and the bowling is not too bad either.

Weaknesses

The Guyana Amazon Warriors are often unpredictable with their batting. Players like Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran can go many matches between good innings. Death bowling also seems to be a concern.

CPL 2021 Betting Tips and Prediction for Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana Amazon Warriors are currently being offered at 6.50 to win CPL 2021. The bookmakers are valuing them below all but one team in the CPL and we think that is a mistake. GAW certainly has the team to be able to make the playoffs, even if it does not end up winning.

We like Shimron Hetmyer to be their top scorer, as he was the last year with 267 runs. Imran Tahir should be an easy pick for the Top Bowler Guyana Amazon Warriors Betting market as well.

St. Lucia Kings

CPL 2020 Result: Runners-Up (Lost in the Finals)

Strengths

The St. Lucia Kings have packed their team with a lot of utility players that can contribute with both the bat and ball. It gives the side a lot of depth and flexibility. They have Samit Patel, Keemo Paul, Rakheem Cornwall, and Roston Chase all of whom should find a place in the playing eleven.

Andre Fletcher provides the power-up front while Obed McCoy, Kesrick Williams, and Alzarri Joseph will headline the bowling attack.

Weaknesses

A bit light on batting strength and power in the middle. The bowling is also going to depend on Obed McCoy a bit too much for our liking. There are a number of people that can contribute but the quality is somewhat lacking.

CPL 2021 Betting Tips and Prediction for St. Lucia Kings

The St. Lucia Kings are currently being offered at odds of 7 to 1. These are the longest odds out of any team to win CPL 2021 and we have to say we agree with the bookmakers here. We just don’t see a bet on St. Lucia Kings to win as being worth the risk right now.

Keep an eye out for Tim David during the CPL 2021 season. He was brilliant in the PSL and we think he could be a surprise package for the St. Lucia Kings once more. Obed McCoy to be the Highest Wicket Taker for the St. Lucia Kings looks very likely.

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots

CPL 2020 Result: Last (Just one win out of ten matches)

Strengths

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SNP) have improved their batting lineup for this season. More importantly, it appears as if the senior players for SP are fit and in good form leading up to CPL 2021. Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Sherfane Rutherford, Fabian Allen, Ravi Bopara, and Asif Ali all should be available for this edition of the CPL.

That is a good batting lineup with plenty of power and T20 expertise in there.

Weaknesses

We are worried about the fitness of players like Gayle and Lewis as they tend to take breaks or get injured quite often. The bowling attack is also quite weak With Sheldon Cottrell and Fawad Ahmed as the two names to watch out for but no one else to support them.

CPL 2021 Betting Tips and Prediction for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots

We think SNP has a great chance of qualifying for the CPL 2021 Semi-finals. They have enough quality to finish in the Top-4 quite easily. Evin Lewis is the obvious choice for the batsman to hit the most runs but Sherfane Rutherford might be a dark horse in this race as well.

Barbados Royals

CPL 2020 Result: 5th (Second-Last) in the Group Stage

Strengths

The Barbados Royals have some in-form players leading their charge this season. Players like Kyle Mayers, Glenn Phillips, Hayden Walsh, and Jake Lintott have made a name for themselves in international cricket or other franchise competitions recently.

Jason Holder, Thisara Perera, and Mohammad Amir also add a lot of experience to the team.

Weaknesses

A lack of depth in the batting lineup. Johnson Charles is the leading batsman of the team and while he is a good performer at the CPL level, he is not really dependable. Shai Hope is not a natural T20 player and so a lot of the responsibility to get the runs will fall on Glenn Phillips.

The bowling lineup is also full of players that can be quite expensive on most days.

CPL 2021 Betting Tips and Prediction for Barbados Royals

The Barbados Tridents are currently being offered at 5.50 to win CPL 2021. The Bookmakers are valuing them the same as SNP or the Jamaica Tallawahs and we think that is just bananas. Barbados Tridents may cause an upset or two but it will struggle to reach the semi-finals.

Glenn Phillips is our pick for the Top Batsman Barbados Tridents while Hayden Walsh is our pick to be the highest wicket-taker for his team.

Jamaica Tallawahs

CPL 2020 Result: 4th in the Group Stage, Lost in the Semi-Final

Strengths

Jamaica Tallawahs won just three matches in the group stage in 2020 but just sneaked into the semi-final. Their biggest strength has to be the presence of Andre Russell, the best T20 player in the world. He will have Rovman Powell, Chadwick Walton, and Carlos Brathwaite for support this season.

This world-class lineup of all-rounders and power hitters makes the Jamaica Tallawahs a very dangerous team.

Weaknesses

It seems that no one really wants to play for the Jamaica Tallawahs and there is always some discontent in the camp. This makes the Tallawahs perennial underperformers. We think they lack balance in their lineup and the bowling attack also looks a bit thin.

CPL 2021 Betting Tips and Prediction for Jamaica Tallawahs

The Jamaica Tallawahs are currently being rated as the second-most likely team to win CPL 2021. That is laughable and they only really have a chance because of the CPL format. We doubt whether they are going to be able to reach the CPL 2021 semi-final also or not.

About CPL

The Caribbean Premier League was launched in 2013, taking the place of the Caribbean Twenty20 competition, which itself had been launched back in 2010 and ran just four times before the Caribbean Premier League replaced it.

The Caribbean Premier League is the premier Twenty20 cricketing competition in the Caribbean, a region renowned for producing quality players and one that is well known for its love of the game. Since the beginning the Caribbean Premier League has been contested by teams from across the Caribbean, covering countries like Barbados and Jamaica, as well as St Kitts and Nevis.

The stadiums for the Caribbean Premier League are located across the Americas, ranging from Sabina Park in Jamaica to the Central Broward Regional Park, which is a purpose built cricket ground that is located in Florida, USA.

The League

The first six teams to signup for the Caribbean Premier League were:

  • Jamaica Tallawahs
  • Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel (later reamed the Trinbago Knight Riders)
  • Barbados Tridents
  • Guyana Amazon Warriors
  • St Lucia Zouks
  • Antigua Hawksbills

In 2015, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots joined the Caribbean Premier League as the first expansion team. This franchise is actually supported by the government of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Many of the players for this new franchise came from Antigua Hawksbills, which didn’t sign on for the 2015 Caribbean Premier League and has been a dormant franchise since them.

Seasons

The first season of the CPL was in 2013. This was won by Jamaica Tallawahs, who went on to finish third in the second season, before winning for the second time during the 2016 Caribbean Premier League. The Guyana Amazon Warriors have been one of the most consistent teams in the league and finished as the runners-up during the first two seasons and then during the fourth season.

The Trinbago Knight Riders were the surprise winners during the third season. They had finished 4th in the two seasons prior to this and few expected them to claim glory. After they did, many fans had high hopes for their team, but they followed a title in 2015 by finishing 3rd in 2016. The only other winner in the first four seasons of the Caribbean Premier League was the Barbados Tridents, who won in 2014 and then finished as the runners-up the following year.

The side that has the poorest record in the Caribbean Premier League are Antigua Hawksbills, who finished 5th and then 6th in the first two seasons, before going dormant after that. St Lucia Zouks have also had a poor showing throughout. They contested with Antigua at the bottom, finishing 6th and then 5th in this opening two seasons before finishing 5th again in 2015 and then improving with a 4th place in 2016.

Sponsors

Technically the name for the Caribbean Premier League is the Hero CPL, or at least it is as long as the Hero MotoCorp remain the sponsors. Formerly known as Hero Honda, they manufacture scooters and motorcycles in India and are one of the richest companies in the world.

The Caribbean Premier League is administered by the West Indies Cricket Board and it has a salary cap of $780,000 (this was previously $600,000).

Broadcasters

This is one of the most widely broadcasted cricket leagues. It’s not always easy to find live shows of domestic league games outside the big countries, but there is more than a fair share of networks showing this one. What’s more, all of these are free and widely available.

For instance, in the UK, you can watch the Caribbean Premier League on Dave, a channel that is available on Sky, BT, Virgin, Freeview and pretty much every other TV package. It is also shown on BT Sport, which is available as a paid channel on Sky and as a free addition to BT TV. If you’re in the United States and all surrounding territories you can watch the Caribbean Premier League on ESPN.

Other TV channels that show the Caribbean Premier League include ZIZ, CNC3, TV Guyana and the CBC, all of which are based in the Caribbean. It is also shown on TEN Sports in Pakistan, Fox Sports in Australia and Sky Sport in New Zealand. That’s pretty much it for the main ones, but there are a couple other small broadcasters and you can also find live streams online.
